Jeffrey Elkinson is a Director in the Litigation & Insolvency department in the Bermuda office of Conyers Dill & Pearman. He joined Conyers in 1988 and his practice includes commercial litigation and arbitration in the area of contentious trusts, insurance and re-insurance, construction and with particular specialization in administrative law and telecommunications.
Jeffrey is an active arbitrator, mediator and counsel in domestic and international disputes with appointments from ICC, LCIA and CIArb and, in respect of domain names, HKIAC/ADNDRC. With true international experience, Jeffrey has audience rights in numerous jurisdictions and is a member of the Bars of Ireland, England and Wales, Hong Kong, NSW Australia, New York with appellate rights for the Federal Circuit, Bermuda and the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court. Jeffrey is the former President of the CIArb and remains active with the organisation on a pro-bono basis as course director and tutor for the CIArb of its Fellowship and Member courses.
Highlights of Jeffrey’s experience include successfully acting in the Megafon dispute over ownership of a large proportion of its shares, advising one of the wealthiest families in the United States in a case involving a restructuring of a trust with in excess of 70 beneficiaries, acting in the Thyssen Bornemisza trust dispute over a period of 5 years, acting in tax information exchange agreement matters, successfully securing the right of a party served with a notice to produce documents to see the underlying request from the foreign country where the Bermuda Government sought to rely on the confidentiality provisions contained in the OECD Model Tax Information Exchange Agreement. Jeffrey has extensive aviation experience and is standing local counsel for AA, BA and United and assisted in the global merger of AA and USAir and Continental and United. He acts for the Bermuda Monetary Authority as well as local Trust Companies and the Bank of NT Butterfield and Son Ltd.
Jeffrey is the chairman of the Professional Conduct Committee for the Bermuda Bar and also chairs the Police Complaints Authority for Bermuda. He is a door tenant of Des Voeux Chamber, Hong Kong. Jeffrey is regular speaker at global industry events and is the co-author of the Bermuda Chapter of the ICAA Handbook, Spitz’ Tax Havens of the World and Offshore Commercial Law in Bermuda.
