Professor Doug Jones AOis an independent international arbitrator based in London, Sydney and Toronto. He is a door tenant at Akin Chambers, London, and a member arbitrator at Arbitration Place, Toronto. Doug has extensive experience as arbitrator in international and domestic arbitrations under the ICC, LCIA, AAA, ICDR, KLRCA, SIAC, DIAC, ACICA, European Development Fund Arbitration and Conciliation Rules, as well as the ICSID and UNCITRAL Rules. He is the Australian government nominee on the ICSID panel of arbitrators. Doug regularly sits as an arbitrator in London, in addition to many other jurisdictions including Singapore, California, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur.
Doug is the immediate-past president of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, Past President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London (2011) and a Member of the LCIA Court. He is a Foundation Fellow and Grade 1 Arbitrator of the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators Australia, a Fellow of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand, President of the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation Australia, Member of the ICC Australia Arbitration Committee, Council Member of the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions, Fellow of the Western Australian Institute of Dispute Management and a member of a number of panels of international arbitral bodies. Doug is also a Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and a Visiting Professor at Queen Mary College, University of London.
Doug is acknowledged as a leading arbitrator and is highly ranked in a number of leading publications such as Chambers Asia-Pacific where he has been recognised as a star individual in the Australian legal community for three successive years. In 2013, 2014 and most recently in 2015, Doug was recognised as one of the most in-demand arbitrators and received a band one ranking in the international arbitration category. In 2013, he was also ranked band one in the projects category and band two for dispute resolution/arbitration in Australia. At the Global Arbitration Review Awards 2013, Doug was joint runner-up in the category of the Best Prepared and Most Responsive Arbitrator of the Year Award. He was awarded the Michael Kirby Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Lawyers Weekly Law Awards in Sydney in recognition of his leadership in the Australian legal profession. In 2015, he was named the Best Lawyers® Sydney International Arbitration "Lawyer of the Year".
Doug is an Officer of the Australian Order, having received this in June 2012 in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, for distinguished service to the law as a leader in the areas of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, to policy reform, and to national and international professional organisations. Previously, in January 1999, Doug was made a of Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his services to construction law and dispute resolution.
Doug is both author and editor of various respected arbitration and construction law texts. He is author of Commercial Arbitration in Australia, which was first published by Lawbook Co (Thomson Reuters) in 2011, and which is now in its 2nd Edition. He is also author of Building and Construction Claims and Disputes, published by Construction Publications in 1996. Doug is also Co-Editor in Chief of the International Construction Law Review and holds the position of Editorial Board Member for a number of publications, including the International Trade and Business Law Review, the India Business Law Journal and the Global Arbitration Review.
